Jane Houng is a British author, speaker, women’s rights advocate and humanitarian. Educated at Cambridge University and the Vermont College of Fine Arts in the US, she has worked in the media, education and academia. She has published 16 children’s books and a memoir titled Beirut is More Beautiful by Bike.
Tragically, in late 2017, Jane lost her 30-year-old daughter, Rebecca ‘Becky’ Dykes, to gender-based violence in Lebanon. She is now the Founder and Chair of Trustees of the UK-registered charity, Becky’s Button. The charity provides youth-led education and promotes community action through gender-based violence workshops at secondary schools and universities. Its impact reflects a preventive approach: addressing risk before harm occurs, and attitudes before they turn violent.
The charity has also distributed over 8,000 panic alarms called Becky’s Buttons to vulnerable women in the UK, Cyprus, Lebanon, Jordan and Pakistan.
